Waltzes, Foxtrots and Tangos — OH MY!
In olden days, ballroom dancing, or "social dancing", was for the upper crust of society, leaving "folk dancing" for the lower classes. Modern ballroom dancing is much more democratic, and the boundaries between once-polarized ballroom and folk dances become blurred. However, even in times long gone many "ballroom" dances were simply elevated folk dances.
Today the popularity of ballroom, latin and other types of social dancing can be seen all over the world, and even on television, with shows such as "Dancing With The Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance". Competitions abound and the dancers are awe-inspiring.
Here at the Ballroom our emphasis is on helping you find your talents and, above all, having fun!
American Style vs. International Style
"American Style" ballroom and latin dancing has always been more popular for social dancing in the United States, whereas "International Style" (sometimes called "English Style") is danced throughout the rest of the world. While we mostly teach American Style here at The Ballroom, we do offer group classes and private lessons in International Style as well.
The sections below will take you to a wealth of information to help you get to know the different styles of dance that we teach here at The Ballroom. For each dance, we've assembled for you a general description, some historical details, and samples of appropriate music to help you better get to know the different styles and options of dance available to you.
